Background



  • Launched by Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1971 as a mutual fund. The Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation (CFTC) provides technical assistance in support of economic growth, poverty reduction and sustainable development.
  • The CFTC has an annual budget of around £29 million, which is resourced by voluntary contributions from Commonwealth member governments.
  • CFTC programmes are mostly demand-led basis and assistance is targeted towards helping member countries acquire knowledge and institutional capacity to address their own developing priorities – set within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals.
