THE ARAB REPUBLIC OF EGYPT

Diplomatic relations were established on 2nd May 1984. The Embassy of Brunei Darussalam was established in Cairo on 21st October 1984. The non-resident Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Brunei Darussalam is HE Hany Abdelkader Shash who is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Bilateral Consultation between Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam and the Arab Republic of Egypt became effective in December 2005 by exchanges of notes. It will be held once every two years and will be headed at the level of the Permanent Secretary/Assistant Minister of the respective Ministries. The first consultation was held in Bandar Seri Begawan on 3rd August 2006.

Brunei Darussalam and the Arab Republic of Egypt signed an Air Services Agreement on 8 November 1993 in Cairo. Royal Brunei Airlines, however, suspended its operations since July 1995. Currently, Royal Brunei Airlines has no intention to have scheduled flights to Cairo.

Brunei Darussalam and the Arab Republic of Egypt have established close cooperation in the field of education and religious affairs. The Al-Azhar University has offered scholarships for Bruneians to study at the University and about 430 students have already graduated from Al Azhar since 1963.

Brunei Darussalam has also been sending participants to Egypt for the Quran memorizing competition for non-Arabic contestant category every year since 1999. In 2006, a Brunei student won first place in the competition. In 2008 another Bruneian won third place in the competition.
